An open letter to actor samuel l jackson dear mr samuel l jackson it was great having such iconic and outstanding member of the african american society visit the motherland and I believe you had a fantastic time during your stays in both ghana and gabon i’m very sure that the warm welcome you received was unlike anything you have experienced before furthermore i’m sure you witnessed some very beautiful cultures had some palate testing foods and enjoyed some of our modern facilities you saw our beautiful modern cities and like everywhere in the world i’m also sure you saw some locals in less affluent communities however after the warm and brotherly welcome we extended to you and the publicity you received for your project you thanked us by spitting in our faces with an arrogance that’s alien to our friendly nature like the big ‘charitable’ organisations and the western media you exploited the most vulnerable people of our society for your own selfish gains you fed into the same old negative narrative of africa the image of poor and afflicted children this one sided narrative has always been beneficial to the big charities but damaging to africans everywhere in the world you overlooked the many positive developments and beautiful natural sights and shared images of children and women carrying items on their heads while those are an intrinsic part of our culture there was no balance in your reportage and portrayal of your experience and that was very disappointing especially coming from a man who claims to champion the liberation of the black man this year has been dubbed the yearofreturn to commemorate 400 years since the first slaves were taken on a ship from the british gold coast now ghana to virginia and as a result there are many africans from different parts of the world visiting ghana who are sharing some wonderful images which drown and rubbish your negative ones mr jackson you may have done very well for yourself and enjoy some level of respect in society but I can assure you that you like myself are judged by the status of our continent of origin therefore these poor children are a reflection of you me and anyone of african descent your images showing children from a certain class of society which is also present in every other country including the usa has done nothing but fuel the unfounded propaganda by racist eugenicists that africans are primitive and can never develop I would excuse you if were ignorant of the damaging effects of your negative and imbalanced reportage but I will not because your attention was called by some of your well meaning followers rather you arrogantly posted even more damning images of women and children to spite these followers I met you 20 years ago at the notting hill carnival where you were handing out t shirts to promote your brand you can imagine how delighted I was on that day because you and a few others were people I very much admired and aspired to emulate you will be happy to know that you still have my utmost respect however I sometimes wonder whether it’s by coincidence that you played the hateful uncle tom in django or that that role actually befits your nature I certainly hope the latter isn’t the case sir what you do on your social media pages is entirely your cup of tea you’re at liberty to share whatever you want but please do remember that the images we show of ourselves influence how people perceive us I pray you will take time and think deeply about these concerns raised by myself and others who follow you judging from the recent nice images you’ve shared on instagram I guess you’re somewhere on vacation away from the ‘run down undeveloped africa’ please share more nice images of this place we really like it looking forward to your documentary on slavery erasmus quartey unapologetically african.
